Do This, Not This to Treat Parkinson’s Stooped Posture

Here is an easy exercise to do, if you do it the right way. It’s actually two exercises in one that you should be doing throughout the day.

To get started, you can do this exercise seated or standing. Doing this exercise takes some imagination, which is really great for your brain!

To treat Parkinson’s stooped posture correctly:

  • Cup your hands like you are holding water in them.
  • Turn them and cradle the base of your skull with the palms of your hands.
  • Gently pull your head upward, raising your eye gaze up. Feel a sense of “tallness” and straightening in your posture.
  • While keeping your arms lifted, bring them out to a goal post position (90 degrees at the elbow).
  • With your posture tall, “THINK” of your shoulder blades gliding together. Your arms should go back slightly.
  • Hold this position for a few seconds. Relax and repeat 3 times.
  • Make sure and breathe with each contraction.
  • Warning: If you SQUEEZE your shoulder blades together, you will usually get the opposite result with the head jutted forward and posture rounded.

You can do this exercise throughout the day. It is especially great for those times when you have been rounded forward over a task such as watching TV, computer/screen time, or even yard work.

It’s so important to constantly combat the affects of Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s doesn’t give up easily, but we are stronger, as long as we keep fighting.
