Are You Being Told Your Glutes Are Weak? What People With Parkinson’s Should Know

In my Balance Builders course, it’s clear to my students that Parkinson’s really affects what they want to do with their bodies when they’re trying to execute a particular drill. Balance is a complex process that relies on many systems working together in the body to regain special awareness or proprioception.

As a coach, I must cue differently than with the general population. Why? With Parkinson’s, the brain works in a different way. Things that used to be intuitive start to feel more difficult or even impossible as the brain tries to navigate signaling with diminished dopamine.

How can we overcome this disconnect between brain signals and physical movement? It’s all about little movements that deliver big returns. It takes specialized cuing and ensuring the student understands and has patience with the process.

This “shift and lift” exercise is one that really helps. It might seem easy, but it can be tricky at first. It will turn on your glutes and help you with your walking and balance. Watch this video to learn how to do it:
