The vestibular system is your body’s internal balance center. The inner ear constantly sends information to your brain about your head position, movement, and spatial orientation. Together with your vision and sensation from your muscles and joints, the vestibular system helps you stay upright and move safely through your environment.
For people with Parkinson’s disease, balance can become more challenging. Many individuals begin relying heavily on their vision for stability, which can make them feel unsteady when turning their head, walking in busy environments, or changing directions. If the vestibular system is not regularly challenged, it can become less effective at helping the brain maintain balance.

The good news is that the vestibular system can be trained. Safe exercises that involve turning your head while tracking an object, shifting focus, or responding to movement can help improve your brain’s ability to process balance information. Activities such as tossing and catching a scarf while turning your head encourage your vestibular system to work together with your vision and body awareness.
You should practice vestibular training safely and progressively. Start with simple movements, use a stable support nearby if needed, and work within your comfort level.
**Mild challenges are helpful, but exercises should not cause excessive dizziness or increase your risk of falling.
By consistently challenging your vestibular system in a safe environment, you can improve your balance, confidence, and mobility while reducing your risk of falls. Small movements practiced regularly can lead to meaningful improvements in everyday function.
