Maintaining hand coordination is an important part of staying independent with Parkinson’s disease. Everyday tasks like buttoning a shirt, writing, cooking, and using a phone all depend on your brain knowing where your hands are in space, a skill called proprioception.
This simple exercise challenges that awareness by having you raise both hands overhead and touch your thumb to the fingers of the opposite hand without looking. By removing visual feedback, your brain must rely on sensory information from your muscles and joints, helping reinforce the connection between your brain and your hands.
Holding your arms overhead also adds an endurance component by strengthening the muscles that support the shoulders and upper arms. If the full position becomes tiring, simply take a short break and continue when you’re ready. The goal isn’t speed, it’s slow, accurate, and controlled movement.
Focus on making each fingertip touch intentional and notice how your accuracy improves with practice. As always, perform the exercise in a safe, comfortable position, and stop if you experience pain, dizziness, or unusual fatigue.
Watch the video above to follow along with the exercise. For an added bonus, try incorporating your voice. For example, you can call out which fingers you are touching—“Thumb to index finger!”
Like many exercises for Parkinson’s, consistency is more important than intensity. Spending just a few minutes each day practicing movements that challenge coordination, proprioception, and endurance can help maintain hand function and confidence during everyday activities. Small improvements made consistently can lead to meaningful gains over time.
As you practice this exercise, remember that movement skills improve most when they’re part of a broader routine. If you’d like structured support to level up your workouts, we offer several Parkinson’s-specific online courses that build on the same principles:
