Motion Is The Lotion When You Have Parkinson’s Disease

I love the saying, “Motion is the lotion when you have Parkinson’s Disease.” I’ve used it for years with my personal training clients because it is a clever way to remember a powerful message. With sitting or resting too much, painful joints can become more painful. Moving your body regularly keeps joints and soft tissues flexible.

People will tell me that their doctor said to rest their back/knee/etc., but the truth is that moving is the therapy. Here’s why: it is widely accepted by doctors, physical therapists, trainers and other body workers that the body’s soft tissues (ligaments, tendons, and muscles) will shorten and tighten if not moved through their full range of motion on a regular basis. If soft tissue is inflamed, it becomes more swollen if it is held still or isolated. When that joint is moved again, it will feel tight and painful. This makes the person feel like it’s a bad idea to move it, and they go back to resting which ultimately makes the condition worse.

Being Brave Doesn’t Mean You’re Not Scared

It is finally happening! Kimberly Berg’s Rebel Fit Club will be opening our new headquarters site this August. This dream of mine is coming true after years of helping people and seeing them improve, yet feeling like there was still so much more to do. I’ve been brave during this journey, and at times I was scared and wondering if I was going to be able to make it happen. Being brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It means you face your fears despite of being scared.

Blue Zones are places where the healthiest people in the world live (people with great mental and physical health and the location has record numbers of people who live past 100 years old). A lot of it has to do with the food they eat. Anytime you have bright-colored food with a little sweet and savory, you have a winner. This dish can be enjoyed anytime throughout the year.

This quinoa salad is a meal in one bowl. Serve it for lunch or dinner.

Is Your L-Dopa Not Working As Well As It Should? It Could Be Your Gut Microbes.

Trillions of microbes live in our gut to help break down and absorb nutrients. Since our guts cannot digest certain substances like fiber, the microbes step up to perform this task.

“But this kind of microbial metabolism can also be detrimental.” said Maini Rekdal, a graduate student in the lab of Professor Emily Balskus. Gut microbes can chew up medications too, and often with hazardous side effects. “Maybe the drug is not going to reach its target in the body, maybe it’s going to be toxic all of a sudden, maybe it’s going to be less helpful.”

What Roles Are Involved To Fight PD?

My friend and PD fighter Jon Pawelkop just went to the World’s Parkinson’s Congress in Kyoto, Japan. He attended a seminar given by Tim Hague, author of Perseverance, and winner of The Amazing Race Canada. Tim spoke about activism, awareness, and the roles people with PD should play. I loved the message, and asked if I could share it with my readers. Here are Jon’s takeaways from the talk:
