Triceps exercises are very important but often get overlooked. The triceps group is on the back of your arm and its primary function is extension of the elbow. This means you need strong triceps for getting up from the floor or a chair, pushing items, pushing your body in a push-up, or lifting something over your head, among many other tasks.
Basically, every time you straighten your elbow, you are using your triceps. Since they are located on the back of the arm, many people skip them in a workout and go straight for the biceps curls—because it’s fun to see your biceps get big, right?
Triceps need extra attention because extension is so important when you have Parkinson’s. Many of the exercises in senior classes work triceps, but these exercises are often not appropriate for anyone with stooped posture or painful shoulders, which are common with PD.
For example, triceps dips off the seat of a chair can really injure your shoulders if you have a forward-rounded posture. There is just too much pressure on the connective tissue holding your humerus (arm bone) in the shoulder complex. This can lead to a tear or strain.
Shoulders have a huge range of motion, but that also makes them vulnerable to injury, like a rotator cuff tear. Fortunately, there are many safer exercise choices.
