Balance is a complex interaction between many systems in the human body: our feet read the ground, our eyes and ears tell us where we are in space, and our core strength affects posture. With Parkinson’s, any of these systems can contribute to balance issues and falling.
Lack of neck mobility also affects balance. Imagine hearing a noise, but you’re not able to turn your head or track with your eyes, so you have to move your whole body. This can throw off your balance and cause a fall. All of the systems are connected.
This exercise is great for challenging your balance while working on the different systems that help you keep your balance.
Watch this video to find out how to improve your balance and decrease your risk of falling if you have Parkinson’s:
** If you’re experiencing problems with balance, it’s important to ask your doctor about physical therapy sessions with someone who specializes in balance to determine if your issues are due to your eyes or ears.
