People with Parkinson’s often develop stooped posture because of the neurological forward pulling and muscle tightening of the chest and shoulders. As a result, the back muscles become weak, and the shoulder blades become fixed and displaced. This whole process causes pain, breathing and swallowing difficulty, and balance issues.
This collarbone lift exercise using a resistance band along with good nasal breathing can unstick your ribs and help them expand normally. This exercise is one of the warm-up movements I use in my Posture School, a five-week course that I teach at the Rebel Fit Club, both in person and online. (Scroll down for more information about Posture School and how to sign up.)
By extending your arms open and back, the resistance band helps guide your ribs to rotate fully and normally when you take a breath, activating your upper back muscles while stretching out the chest muscles that pull you forward. Through this movement, your ribs are working with the rest of your body, including your brain, to establish better biomechanics when breathing.
Watch this video to learn how to use a resistance band to treat Parkinson’s compressed stooped posture:
Do 10 to 15 repetitions of this exercise every day to unlock your ribs and help them rotate normally.
