
I had a viewer who asked if strength training was good for balance. His doctor told him, “Just lift weights, and your balance will improve.” Is this true? The answer is NO.
The research shows that being strong is important for independence, but you need to combine strength work with balance challenge exercises in order to improve your balance. The two together are a great combination!
I’ve included the first move to get you started: the sit-to-stand exercise with progressions for beginners. Since we know prolonged sitting is detrimental to our health and the progression of Parkinson’s, I made a short video that will not only get your blood pumping but will also show you how to:
- Use your feet and glutes to get yourself up from a chair
- Maintain control when getting up or sitting back down
- Strengthen core muscles and improve your balance
- Work on sequencing and brain involvement
Being able to stand up from a chair helps you maintain your independence because it strengthens all the muscles you need to stand and walk. Plus, it improves the power of your entire body system.
