Can you blow up a balloon? 🎈
Many people with Parkinson’s are surprised to discover they can no longer blow up a balloon to help with a grandchild’s birthday party. Something that once seemed so simple can slowly diminish without us even realizing it.
But why?
One reason is that the respiratory muscles can weaken over time.
What’s fascinating is that blowing up a balloon can actually become a helpful exercise for your:
- Respiratory system
- Posture
- Back pain
- Brain function
When you inhale deeply through your nose, your ribs expand, helping mobilize your spine while activating deep respiratory muscles. Then, as you exhale slowly through pursed lips against slight resistance, like a balloon, you create back pressure that helps improve oxygen use and strengthen breathing muscles.
A full exhale with a slight hold at the end can also help relax muscles, strengthen core muscles, calm your nervous system, and help you sleep better.
Blowing up a balloon may be simple, but it can benefit your whole body, including your brain.
