When you’re living with Parkinson’s, changes in balance can make movement feel intimidating. You may worry about falling, feel less confident doing activities you once enjoyed, or wonder if you’ve waited too long to start working on your balance. But you don’t have to begin with big or complicated movements. Starting small, at your own level and with appropriate support, can be a meaningful way to practice movement and build confidence. What matters most is taking that first step and giving yourself the opportunity to keep moving forward.
Balance is something that can be practiced. Exercises that challenge posture, weight shifting, stepping, coordination, and stability can help you work on the skills you use during everyday movement. The key is choosing exercises that are appropriate for your abilities and prioritizing safety, especially if you have a history of falls or significant balance difficulties. Progress doesn’t have to mean doing something dramatic. It might mean practicing a movement with support, becoming more comfortable with a particular exercise, or gradually challenging yourself as you’re able.
That’s why we created Balance Builders Academy, a course designed to help people with Parkinson’s work on balance through structured, progressive exercise. Rather than worrying about where you “should” be, the goal is to start where you are and build from there. Whether balance has recently become a concern or you’ve been dealing with changes for years, it’s not about being perfect or keeping up with someone else. Start small, practice consistently, and keep building—one step at a time. Email Kimberly to learn more.
