For people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), hand exercise should focus on more than simply building grip strength. Parkinson’s can affect the brain’s ability to initiate, scale, and coordinate movement, leading to stiffness, slowness, reduced dexterity, and difficulty getting the hands and fingers to respond smoothly to an intended task. Exercises that encourage finger independence, agility, coordination, and larger, more deliberate movements can therefore be especially valuable for maintaining everyday hand function.
Flexion (closing the fingers into the palm) is often already a dominant posture for people who experience hand stiffness, cramping, or abnormal posturing. For these individuals, repeatedly squeezing a ball may reinforce a movement they can already perform, while doing little to address the more challenging task: opening and extending the hand and fingers with control. Practicing extension, finger spreading, reaching, tapping, and coordinated movements can help train the hand to move through a fuller range and respond more effectively during functional activities.
The goal of hand exercise in PD should be functional movement, not simply a stronger squeeze. Activities that challenge dexterity, speed, coordination, finger extension, and purposeful opening of the hand may better reflect the skills needed for tasks such as buttoning clothing, typing, handling utensils, writing, or picking up objects.
To improve your hand dexterity, you can practice the same exercises that drummers and other musicians use to warm up their hands before they play. Watch my latest video and give them a try!
